Burnham Waters and our new build bungalows in Essex: we share ten tips for a happy retirement

If you have been searching for a new build bungalows then you are likely to be approaching, if not already enjoying retirement. At Burnham Waters, a new luxury retirement community in Burnham on Crouch, where we offer a range of one, two and three-bedroom new build bungalows, we share our top 10 tips for a happy retirement.

1. Get your finances in order

The earlier you can begin to plan your retirement the better! Having enough money set aside to support you in your later years will have a huge impact on when you can afford to retire and the lifestyle you will be able to enjoy.

If you are seeking financial advice for your retirement, you might want to take a look at Pension Wise, a service provided by MoneyHelper, which is backed by the government. They offer a range of free, impartial guidance to over 50s, covering everything from pensions and building your retirement pot to tax allowances.

2. Wind down gently

You may have been dreaming of retirement for some time and researching new build bungalows, while imagining how you will spend your free time and making lots of plans. However, it may be a good idea to ease into your retirement more slowly. By reducing the number of days you work over a few years, you can get used to having some extra free time, while still enjoying the sense of purpose (and the financial benefits) of being at work!

3. Develop a routine

Having a regular routine can be a great way to plan your days and it can help you to feel a sense of purpose. No-longer having to get up at a certain time for work can sometimes make the mornings feel a little unstructured but if you have an exercise class to attend, friends to meet, or a voluntary role to show up for, it can make the days feel busier, more enjoyable and more fulfilling.

4. Keep physically active

Incorporating regular exercise into your routine is so important, no matter what age you are. As you move into retirement, it can be a great opportunity to try something new – take up a new hobby or make new friends by joining a local club.

Read more about the benefits of exercise for seniors in our article here.

5. Keep your mind active

As well as keeping physically active, it is important to keep your mind active too. Whether that’s learning a new skill, such as learning to play a new instrument, or taking up a new hobby, there are lots of ways to keep your brain active and engaged.

6. Eat well

Eating a carefully balanced diet is good for your physical and your mental health and your all round wellbeing. If you find yourself with a little more time in retirement, it can be a great opportunity to spend more time planning your meals and to explore new recipes.

The British Heart Foundation has a great recipe finder if you are looking for some inspiration!

7. Go for a health check

Do you know about the NHS Health Check programme? It aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and certain types of dementia.

Everyone between the ages of 40 and 74, who has not already been diagnosed with one of the above conditions (or have certain risk factors), is invited once every five years to have a check-up to assess their risk of these age-related illnesses. You will also be given support and advice to help you reduce or manage that risk.

If you’re in this category but haven’t had a check in the last five years, you can request a Health Check via your GP.

8. Volunteer within your community

If you have moved into one of our new build bungalows and you are looking to fill some time, there are lots of groups and charities looking for volunteers. From local charity shops and youth organisations, to pet rescue centres and libraries, there’s an abundance of opportunities out there.  Not only is it an opportunity for you to give back, but it can be a great way to make new friends or to share a hobby or a passion with others.

Whether you are happy to give up a few hours a week, or perhaps a few days, there’s a host of information out there.

Both Essex County Council and Volunteer Essex have lots of information about local volunteering opportunities.

9. Get a new pet

Research has shown that having a pet can have a positive impact on our health and wellbeing – from encouraging us to take exercise to giving us a sense of purpose, there are many advantages to owning a pet in retirement.

At Burnham Waters, our luxury retirement community in Essex, we welcome residents with their four-legged friends. In fact, we’ve even compiled a list of the five best dog walks in Burnham on Crouch.

Feedback

The team have been so patient and understanding with my elderly parents. Although we haven’t been through a purchase yet we are hoping that will come. Nathan and his team have been accommodating, kind and very knowledgable throughout our dealings with them so far. Highly recommend.

Christina Sheilds

Having been met by Nathan we followed him onto the estate and was introduced to Jamie. His truly inspirational concept for a community development have left us wanting to be part of it. Loved the bungalow and once inside we able to see for ourselves the high spec and generous size rooms. Every aspect appears to have been thought about carefully and we are looking forward to seeing the 3 bedroom show home.

Mrs Moss

The property exceeded expectations. My wife and I appreciate how generous you were with your time with us. It’s a great, well thought out and designed development for the over 55’s.

Mr & Mrs Francis

Completely blown away with the spaciousness of the layout of the estate and the beautifully presented bungalow. I can’t thank you enough for the all the advice and information the team at the bungalow gave coupled with the help and genuine understanding and help with our particular issues.
