What are my retirement options in Essex?

There is a lot to consider when it comes to retirement options in Essex. In fact, it’s probably one of the biggest decisions we face as we get older. Looking at your personal preferences, but also, assessing your individual needs is key when making up your mind.

There are many different options available, however, some are more widely recognised than others. We recommend that you explore everything available to you, so that you can make an appropriate and informed decision that’s the perfect fit for you. Here is just a little more about the variety out there.

Care Homes

Care homes, or residential homes, provide accommodation and an array of personal care for people who need extra help and support in most aspects of their daily lives. When we think of elderly accommodation, the first thought is often care homes; however, it’s important to weigh up the options and decipher whether you actually need this type of care and lifestyle at present.

Perhaps someone has suggested that you need a care home because you're starting to need more help day to day? This doesn’t mean that this is the right decision for you, and there could be another alternative that suits you better. Care homes are by no means the only option.

Residential homes provide the highest level of personal care. This might include help with eating, washing, dressing, going to the toilet or taking medication. Some care homes also offer social activities such as day trips or outings.

There are also different facilities available such as:

- Nursing Homes - Provide personal care as well as assistance from qualified nurses.

- Dementia Care Homes - Specialist dementia facilities offered, designed to make people with dementia feel comfortable and safe.

- Dual-Registered Care Home - Accept residents who need both personal care and nursing care. This means that someone who initially just needs personal care but later needs nursing care won’t have to change homes.

It’s no secret that paying for residential care in a care home is expensive, but there is some help available to meet the cost if you are eligible. Be sure to look into every possibility and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Sheltered Accommodation

Sheltered accommodation is the step below a care home. If you need support, are looking to live in an easier to manage home, but are able to live mostly independently, this could be one of the more appropriate retirement options in Essex for you to consider.

Common features of sheltered housing include:

- On site warden and support staff

- 24-hour emergency help through alarm systems

- Communal garden

- Social activities for residents

It’s important to mention that each sheltered accommodation scheme offers something slightly different. It also depends on your individual requirements. Usually, help with meals, around the home, plus basic personal care packages are available with sheltered housing. However, understanding the services available and how much the varying tiers costs are important questions worth asking.

Assisted Living Facilities

Making small changes to your home and getting support with everyday tasks can make a big difference and help you stay independent at home for longer. Assisted living slots between a care home and a retirement village. Assisted living (also known as extra-care housing) is a type of ‘housing with care’. This means you retain independence in your own home, but seek assistance with tasks such as washing, dressing, going to the toilet or taking medication.

It can be varied in terms of what is offered and a great option for those who know they need a little help now again. Assisted living offers reassurance that someone is able to get to you, should you need support.

Assisted living retirement options in Essex can be achieved wherever you live (both rented and owned) and for varying lengths of time. Staff are usually available up to 24 hours per day to provide personal care and support services that are tailored to you. Assisted living facilities can also accommodate people with particular needs such as:

- Dementia care

- Mental health condition care

- Physical disability care

- Sensory impairment care

Retirement Villages

Most appropriate for those who are independent at present and wish to stay as self-sufficient as possible, retirement villages are a great option for both individuals and couples who can look after themselves but want to live in a community with others of a similar age group.

There are certainly comparison to living in your current home, however, retirement villages offer a consistent sense of community and togetherness that combats one of the big problems we face during retirement and growing older – loneliness. Everything you need is on-site and easily accessible for ultimate convenience.

Help and care are of course there should you need it, but this option is perfect if you are able and looking for a low-maintenance and stress-free lifestyle upon retirement and older age. Unlike care homes and sheltered accommodation, retirement villages in Essex are for ages 55 and over. This means that you can comfortably start your transition as soon as you feel ready. You won’t have to worry about the coming years or wait until you’re that bit older.

How do I know which retirement option to choose?

Knowing that you have done all you can to alleviate possible future stress will only aid a more reassured mindset.

Feedback

Our new home has enhanced our lifestyle enormously. When we first walked into our new home...we felt a great sense of relief - we felt that were embarking on a new life together. We are looking forward to a community atmosphere building here and to be able to head out to the onsite shops, as well as the gym and other facilities. I don’t believe that there is another development anywhere that is capable of meeting the same standards as Burnham Waters.

Mr and Mrs Moon

The team have been so patient and understanding with my elderly parents. Although we haven’t been through a purchase yet we are hoping that will come. Nathan and his team have been accommodating, kind and very knowledgable throughout our dealings with them so far. Highly recommend.

Christina Sheilds

Having been met by Nathan we followed him onto the estate and was introduced to Jamie. His truly inspirational concept for a community development have left us wanting to be part of it. Loved the bungalow and once inside we able to see for ourselves the high spec and generous size rooms. Every aspect appears to have been thought about carefully and we are looking forward to seeing the 3 bedroom show home.

Mrs Moss

The home exceeded expectations. My wife and I appreciate how generous you were with your time with us. It’s a great, well thought out and designed development for the over 55’s.

Mr & Mrs Francis

Completely blown away with the spaciousness of the layout of the estate and the beautifully presented bungalow. I can’t thank you enough for the all the advice and information the team at the bungalow gave coupled with the help and genuine understanding and help with our particular issues.
