Retirement villages by sea | World Oceans Day 2025
Retirement villages by sea are often a sought-after place to begin the next chapter of life. With the ocean on your doorstep and a coastal community close by, it’s the perfect place to retire. As a luxury retirement village in the coastal town of Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, we understand what an important part the ocean has to play in life as we know it.
The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth's surface, produces 50% of the planet’s oxygen, regulates the climate, and supports a diverse array of marine life. With World Oceans Day fast approaching, this week, we thought we’d take a closer look at the work being done and how local communities can help to raise awareness this year!
What is World Ocean Day?
World Oceans Day aims to encourage action to conserve the ocean and its vital resources. The day is marked by various environmental activities and events around the world, including beach clean-ups, educational programs, public lectures, art contests, and more.
World Oceans Day occurs on the 8th June each year. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC). The Ocean Project started global coordination of World Oceans Day in 2002.
World Oceans Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide sustainable development goals and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.
Tides are changing
World Ocean Day 2025 is year two in a multi-year action theme: Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate. By growing the movement through transformative collaboration, the aim of World Ocean Day is to create not only a healthy blue planet, but also a more just, equitable and sustainable society.
The aim is that together, we can persuade national legislators and corporate leaders to follow through on their promises and all the big talk about doing the right thing, specifically:
- make the best use of all existing climate solutions;
- accelerate a just transition to clean and renewable energy;
- stop fossil fuel extraction, including oil, gas and coal;
- rapidly and equitably phase out its existing production including for single use plastics;
- collaborate with and amplify the voices of local leaders who are working to implement action within their communities;
- protect and restore natural coastal and ocean ecosystems (and on land) by creating strongly protected areas covering at least 30% of our lands and waters by 2030; and
- keep on creating more solutions at the local, national and international levels that are based on the best science
By collaborating in transformative ways, we can create a healthier and more abundant future for all. It’s ambitious, but the World Ocean Day network collaborating with a wide range of partners in the growing global movement has collectively achieved some major victories over the years.
What we can do?
So now retirement villages by sea know all about this year’s World Oceans Day, let’s take a look at what the local community can do to make an impact on the longevity of our oceans and protect our natural world!
Organise a beach clean-up:
Gather a group of friends/volunteers and head to a nearby beach to pick up trash and debris. This is a great way to aid in protecting our oceans and keeping our beaches clean and beautiful.
Attend an event:
Many organisations and communities hold events on World Oceans Day. Check for local events in your area and attend them. This is a great way to learn more about the importance of our oceans and how we can protect them.
Activity stations:
A great way to involve your community in World Oceans Day is to create an area for ocean themed activities. This can be anything you like, for example:
- A community recycling station.
- A place to create oceanic art – perhaps running a community competition.
- Building a community mural from discarded plastic.
- An interactive information station where people can learn more about the ocean and how they can help by taking action in their own lives and their communities.
- Community bake sale/raffle to raise money for various eco charities.
Reduce plastic use:
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest problems for our oceans. One way to support World Oceans Day is to commit to reducing your plastic use. Changes can be simple - use a reusable water bottle, bring your own shopping bags, and avoid single-use plastics as much as possible.
Spread the word:
If you’re able, use social media or other platforms to spread awareness about World Oceans Day and the importance of protecting our oceans! You can share photos, articles, and other resources to help educate others about this important issue.
For more ways to get involved and share what you’re doing, visit the World Ocean Day page.
