Our Essex Retirement Village on Going Green
At Burnham Waters Essex Retirement Village, we’ve set our sights on creating a positive, eco-friendly and futureproof impact on both the lives of our residents and our planet. As the carbon net zero target gets closer, we’re ensuring that we’re doing all we can for the environment and helping to minimise the global energy crises – it’s never been more crucial.
In this week’s blog, we delve deeper into what the Burnham Waters community is doing to stay eco-friendly and encourage green activity as construction continues with our exciting development.
Our Overall Endeavour
Our goal has always been to create a new community to inspire living a healthy and happy life. Our retirement village in Essex has been intelligently designed to comprehensively cater for the lifestyles and aspirations of the over 55’s.
At the core of our innovative ethos is a strong ecological and landscape focus, that enable residents to remain independent in their property for as long as possible, enjoying activities with friends and neighbours, whilst having the reassurance of 24-hour care.
At Burnham Waters, we are delivering a wealth of amenities and health facilities aimed at encouraging a diverse lifestyle in a beautiful village community, set in an idyllic eco-friendly countryside location.
The Sustainability Mission
We aspire to build an eco-friendly community by always considering the building materials we use, their impact, and how this can be offset or eliminated with more sustainable options. The following sustainability pillars ensure we are doing everything we can to encourage a green building process.
Vision: We aspire to build eco-friendly communities by considering the building. Our goal is to build villages as close to carbon neutral as possible. We aim to enhance the local ecology, landscape and wildlife, with a focus on indigenous flora and fauna and utilise more sustainable building options.
Mission: To ensure our homeowners live in properties that exceed government EPC targets and allow them to heat/cool their homes with minimal or zero environmental impact.
People: We care about our residents, our people, our colleagues, our partners, our customers, and the communities and environments to which we belong.
Passion: The fuel that drives our culture, defines our mindset, and energises our business by collaboration and innovation, in order to provide the best possible environment.
Place: We take our responsibility to the environment seriously. Through our actions, we contribute towards creating a better place for future generations to live.
As Construction Continues
We are actively in keeping with government initiatives to stop using gas in new construction. The Burnham Waters team are working hard, incorporating the use of electric vehicles and EV charging points, sourcing renewable electricity and high levels of carbon neutral insulation into design. Additionally, state of the art technologies including air to water and air to air heat pumps will be installed, contributing to reducing the carbon footprint of our retirement village in Essex.
As part of the government’s Future Home Standard, due to be introduced in 2025, Burnham Waters will be constructed with low carbon heating, in combination with renewable electricity, solar panels and carbon offsetting. This ensures that we are able to deliver an environmentally sustainable community for generations to come.
The Waters Project
In alignment with our mission detailed above, The Waters Project Ltd. was established to make a positive difference in serving the growing market for retirement homes and end‐to‐end social care of the elderly. Within this, the environment is at the heart of the concept.
Our group’s social responsibility policy includes commitments to on‐site sustainable energy production, planting trees and enhancing ecology in each residential and recreational site within our Essex retirement village for future generations.
An Ecological Landscape
The Burnham Waters project has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the lives of our residents, whilst instilling sustainability throughout the process. Our luxury retirement community is surrounded by beautiful communal ecological landscapes. We believe this instils a sense of calm and tranquillity within the community for residents, but also allows them to feel closer and more connected to nature within this countryside setting.
Our ecological space means that a simple afternoon walk becomes an inspiring trail in which residents can enjoy inter-connecting tree-lined pathways, scenic lakes and running water features. This gives them a chance to take in the picturesque views and experience an ambience that is completely different to other Essex surroundings. The lakes amongst the flora provide year-round wildlife activity, adding yet another wonderful interactive element to a stroll around the local surroundings.
As an ecology and landscape led development, we have a passion for ensuring as minimal damage to the surrounding ecology as possible and plan to introduce more as the months progress. We have collaborated with multiple ecologists to ensure that we are doing as much as we can to ensure all flora and fauna are safe throughout the process. This includes replacing any lost hedgerows, planting new trees, the inclusion of a wildflower meadow and ponds as an ecological resource – in fact, these will feature an island to actively protect endangered water voles.
We are always proactive in our approach to nature and can consistently adapt our build plan to ensure that local wildlife are safe and habitats preserved.
E-Mobility
In the bid to be carbon neutral by 2025, our mission to creative a positive community for over 55’s works in synergy with our commitment to the planet, so that we are able to offer the same life-enriching opportunities for generations to come.
It’s important that we hold ourselves accountable and demonstrate our commitment wherever we can to lead the proactive change for our sector. That’s why another of our actions taken to achieve our sustainability goals is E-Mobility. Not only does this encourage independence within the community but it’s easily accessible carbon neutral transport for residents within our retirement village in Essex.
E-Bikes
Our electric bikes operate in the same way as a traditional bike, with a single gear. Simply start pedalling, and the bike will deliver the extra kick needed to smoothly navigate any hilly terrain. Residents and guests to Burnham Waters can rent all of our electric bikes, allowing families to enjoy cycling together.
Electric Car Pool
For longer excursions, our electric car pool is ideal for those who do not own a car or believe that the need to possess a vehicle is no longer necessary. Simply rent for a few hours to go shopping or for several days to visit friends or family!
