Autumn activities in homes for the elderly in Essex
Here at Burnham Waters, which offers homes for the elderly in Essex, autumn is one of our favourite times of the year. The pumpkins are on display, the cool crisp mornings are gracing us with their presence and beautifully coloured leaves lay waiting to be crunched into the dewy, green grass! There’s nothing quite like it.
The luxury retirement bungalows at Burnham Waters have been built with comfort in mind, so whilst the cold begins to nip, you’ll be cosy and warm inside! To keep you busy and in keeping with seasonal festivities, in this week’s blog, we thought we’d detail some of our favourite autumn activities to help you make the most of the change in season.
Nature’s finest
Handmade crafts not only look the part, but they mean the most. With so much natural beauty quite literally on your doorstep, why not venture out and about our countryside haven and see what you can find to spruce up your home? Bring a little of nature’s seasonal beauty indoors or give as a thoughtful gift!
If you’re looking for inspiration, apps like Instagram and Pinterest or the Ideal Home Magazine will give you plenty of ideas to get creative. There’s something extremely rewarding about displaying and showing off something you have found or made. A small autumnal scene using candles and the woodland foliage you’ve found will look beautiful within your bungalow.
Autumnal arts and crafts
Why not get extra creative and use nature’s finest to create a seasonal wreath? They’re the perfect conversation starter and are very on-trend during the autumn. If you’re looking for a group activity, pumpkin painting works a (trick or) treat! With Halloween just a few days away, it’s a fun and seasonal task to get involved in.
Seasonal baking
Around this time of year, there’s nothing better than a good bake off! Channel your inner Mary Berry and try your hand at some simple bakes over the coming weeks. This one is a great idea for a rainy afternoon! I think we can all agree that there’s something quite satisfying about indulging in a little cooking when it’s drizzling outside.
Why not utilise some of your findings in your baked goods? Whilst you’re out, keep an eye on the delicious, fresh produce you can forage! These seasonal berries can all be found around the walking trails in Burnham:
• Blackberries
• Rosehips
• Elderberries
• Bullace
• Rowan berries
• Crab apples
• Whitebeam berries
• Wild raspberries
You can try using other seasonal flavours too! Herbs and spices such as pumpkin spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and cardamom will add both a warm and sweet depth to your cooking! Imagine the smell of apple and blackberry crumble filling you home… Baking is the perfect activity to warm up a chilly day, or to prepare for when the family come round. We’re hungry already!
Blow the cobwebs away
Burnham Waters is designed to incorporate a number of green spaces for community residents to use and enjoy. Everything has been considered and thoughtfully designed to enhance the lives of our residents. It has always been our vision that once complete, walking around Burnham Waters will be a real pleasure, with inter-connecting tree-lined pathways, lakes and water features giving you great views wherever you go.
The lakes will provide year-round wildlife activity to make every stroll an interesting one, while onsite security will add peace of mind for both residents and their families.
In fact, going for a walk is one of the best activities to do in autumn. Not only does nature tend to be at its best, but around Burnham, you will be treated to some of the most picturesque views in Essex; from coastal to countryside scenery! If you’re looking for something on your doorstep, take a look at our recent blog post on walks in Burnham-on-Crouch.
We know just how important walking is for our mental and physical health, so want to encourage the Burnham residential community to get out and about and enjoy the fresh air as often as possible. If you are feeling a little ambitious then why not take on the Saltmarsh Trail. Read our blog post which explores the Essex coast and shares some tips on places to stop off, along the way.
Get gardening!
During the autumn months, there are lots of things you could be doing outdoors, to help prepare your garden for the cooler weather ahead. Now is a great time to make changes to your garden. It’s time to plant spring bulbs and many other plants, mulch your borders and prepare new ground for growing.
If you are enthusiastic about adding some colour to your garden for the autumn but you’d like some new ideas or inspiration, we have lots of ideas about how to get your outside area looking its best - and buzzing with wildlife.
